SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame's women's basketball team returned to campus Wednesday and was welcomed by a group of about 150 fans and school employees following their loss in the NCAA championship game to Texas A&M.
Several players hugged friends and family members as they got off their bus outside the Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish led by seven points in the second half but lost 76-70 to the Aggies in Indianapolis on Tuesday night. Notre Dame beat Tennessee to get to the Final Four and UConn to reach to the title game.
Coach Muffet McGraw and star guard Skylar Diggins smiled to the crowd, but it was apparent that both were still hurting from the loss.
Becca Bruszewski, a departing senior, said it was a quiet ride back.
"Last night we all watched a movie and tried to pick each other up,'' she said. "You know, just trying to get back to normal. I don't think we realize the magnitude of where we got yet. Right now, it is just that we lost.''
Bruszewski, who plans on coaching or playing basketball overseas, said the team's accomplishments during a 31-8 season eventually will register.
"Actually, I think it will sink in a little bit more tomorrow,'' she said. "We are coming back today and it is hard to see, but people are happy. We did something pretty incredible.''
Notre Dame won the national title in 2001 and has made three trips to the Final Four under McGraw.
