J.J. Henry and former British Open champion Stewart Cink are atop the Texas Open leaderboard after shooting 5-under-par 67s, but the spotlight Thursday belonged to Kevin Na during a monumental meltdown on No. 9.
Na set a PGA Tour low for a par-4 hole with a 16, chopping his way through a nightmarish hole during an otherwise solid first round. The South Korean was a combined 4 under on the other 17 holes to finish 8-over 80 in San Antonio.
Na ended the first round thinking he shot a 15 on the hole. But another stroke was added after he reviewed the video replay before signing his scorecard. The worst single-hole score at a PGA Tour event belongs to John Daly, who had an 18 on the par-5 sixth hole at Bay Hill in 1998. Ray Ainsley took 19 shots on the par-4 16th hole at Cherry Hills in the 1938 U.S. Open.
Adam Scott, the defending champion and runner-up at the Masters, was a stroke back at 68, tied with Charley Hoffman, Jhonattan Vegas, Vaughn Taylor and Kevin Chappell.
European Tour: Alexander Noren shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead in the weather-shortened first day of the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel (73) struggled after arriving only one day early, while Rory McIlroy (69) was tied for ninth, five shots back.
"I didn't sleep very well," Schwartzel said. "I'm struggling to focus. The golf swing is tight ... I was swinging so good last week and the weeks before that. The body isn't responding right now, but it will come."
1: 270-yard drive out of bounds right.
2: Penalty stroke.
3: 278-yard drive into woods on right (also hit a provisional third drive which he abandoned).
4: 2-yard shot hits tree, then himself.
5: Penalty for ball hitting himself.
6: Unplayable lie penalty.
7: 2-yard shot stays in woods.
8: 9-yard left-handed shot stays in woods.
9: 12-yard left-handed shot stays in woods.
10: 3-yard shot stays in woods.
11: 27-yard shot stays in woods.
12: 8-yard shot stays in woods.
13: 48-yard shot to rough.
14: 108-yard shot to fringe.
15: 20-yard chip to green.
16: 5-foot, 10-inch putt into hole.
